Polymastia (aka supernumerary breast) is a condition where an accessory breast develops either above or below the normal location of the breasts. These extra breasts are usually only rudimentary nipples (triple nipple), but occasionally glandular and fat tissue may also develop. Supernumerary breasts most commonly occur in the axilla region (armpit), but may develop anywhere along a line from the axilla to the groin. This line is the embryonic mammary ridge and is homologous with the ridge in other
mammals from which multiple breasts develop. There has been at least one reported case of an accessory nipple located outside of the mammary ridge. This one was located on the sole of the foot of a 22 year old female. Originally assumed to be a mole, histological examination determined that it was in fact a rudimentary nipple and areola.
how to treat this ? sugery ?
ReplyDeleteI have one of these on each side. Same local. When I was breastfeeding my son, the enlarged and produced nearly the same amount of milk. I felt like a freak at first. My doc says it is rare. But does it put a higher risk for breast related tumors? (7 years later it oozed colostrum every now and then)
